Content Management Systems (CMS) are websites, Intranets or any web based system that allows you to change the content yourself without requiring IT support.
Static content kills sites. Content management systems (CMS) allow authorised people in your organisation to publish content (i.e. update your website or Intranet) painlessly - like any other document. Depending on your particular requirements, content changes can either be seen immediately or can go through an approval workflow. Most CMSs have built in version control so rolling back changes is effortless. By updating your content regularly you're saying to the search engines, "come back and check here often" - the result of which is usually a higher ranking and therefore more visitors to your site.
CMSs are not limited to just public websites. You might have a subscription based course curriculum, internal training manual or collaborative knowledge sharing wiki, all of which are important to be kept current and up to date. Content management systems don't have to be 'free text' either - you could also have a CMS that caters to highly structured data. For example when recruitment agents list positions and accept applications online it's important that key fields are captured.
For something partly 'off the shelf' we highly recommend Microsoft .NET Umbraco or Dot Net Nuke (DNN) based solutions. Umbraco/DNN solutions are quick to modify, are highly customisable and very easy to use. They also offers 'simple update and go' or approval based editing along with the ability to define and mange 'sub portals'. Umbraco and DNN are built on Microsoft SQL server and ASP.NET.
For the larger enterprise we recommend Microsoft SharePoint.
SharePoint contains powerful security (integration with your Active Directory), workflow and search features. It also offers out of the box support for wiki's, document management and content publishing from within the Office suite of tools. If your needs require a more bespoke solution Kiandra can customise DNN though module development or SharePoint via webparts. Alternatively we can roll our own solution, unique to your requirements.
