Critical Care Information System v2.1
The Critical Care Information System (“CCIS”) is a province wide data collection and reporting tool used by everyone from ICU nurses to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the Critical Care Secretariat. CCIS links all of the hospitals with ICU units across the province of Ontario. Data is gathered daily and in some cases in real time and reports can be generated at any time by any resource with permissions to allow critical decisions to be made on ICU bed usage in their ICU unit, hospital, LHIN or provincially.The overall goal of the CCIS was to provide hospitals, Local Health Integration Networks, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, frontline critical care providers, and the Critical Care Secretariat with the information they need to support decision-making around critical care resource utilization and capacity planning and management. The new system supports provincial efforts to improve access to care, standardize the quality of critical care service delivery, and assist in the monitoring and evaluation of critical care services. Combined with other initiatives under Ontario’s broader Critical Care Strategy, the CCIS provides key information that, until now, has been collected in silos, retrospectively, anecdotally, or in some cases not at all. It provides a consistent and reliable platform for all hospitals and health planners to use to inform and improve both the planning for, and operation of critical care activities.Partnering with CritiCall, the CCIS solution allows for the integration of system-wide critical care information and resources and provides a ‘one stop’ point of access for providers. CCIS allows for a province-wide, real-time view of medical/surgical critical care occupancy and utilization and help to ensure that patients across Ontario have timely access to critical care services. The CCIS helps to define and promote critical care “system” behaviours, share information and expertise more widely, and respond quickly to crisis situations. With CCIS, the province of Ontario is now positioned as the national leader in the development of an innovative critical care service delivery model.
CCIS has been designed in a forward-looking manner, enabling it to grow as needed. The system is automated to collect certain patient-related data from the participating hospitals’ Admit, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) systems and is integrated into the provincial patient registry (EMPI) to ensure that all patient demographic information is correct and up-to-date. The CCIS provides security and complies with Ontario’s privacy legislation and industry best practices for systems containing personally identifiable patient data.
Over time, the CCIS will enhance performance measurement of critical care by providing an evidence base to support the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives necessary to improve the efficiency, delivery and quality of critical care. Ultimately, the CCIS will increase our understanding of how critical care resources are being used across the province, improve access to critical care, support the delivery of high quality critical care and by facilitating evidence-based decision-making, help to ensure the best system response to meeting the needs of critically ill patients.Since the first release of CCIS, Navantis has released v2.0 and v2.1 of the system, with all new reports and report revisions to support and gather data and improve the overall functionality of the CCIS.
